Border Collie Rescue - Working Sheepdog Assessment - Jess
We often assess a Border Collie for its owner at our centre near York.Jess belongs to Jim Closs, the cameraman in this instance, who was interested in finding out how much herding instinct she has.As it happens - not a lot - she was stimulated to chase the sheep on a couple of occasions but it was no more than a natural trigger turning into play.She really did not seem to know why she was doing it and then simply lost interest.This is good as she is a pet living in Edinburgh with Arthurs Seat being her favourite walking area. So the sheep on Arturs Seat are safe - at least from her attention! The Border Collie is designed to be a sheepdog and was originally used for herding livestock in the English and Scottish Borders. Border Collie Rescue assesses all dogs coming into our care for herding ability and will rehome them as stockdogs if that is what they need to do but we also assess and rehome for scent discrimination skills to the Police, Prison Service and Excise to detect drugs, explosives and firearms -- to SARDA and other rescue organisations for mountain rescue and search and rescue work -- to help deaf, blind or otherwise disabled people as well as for working trials, flyball, agility, obedience and other interactive sporting disciplines and many of our dogs have qualified for Crufts in these disciplines. Those that show us they do not need or want to work are rehomed as PAT dogs, pets and companions.

He handles sublimely and holds his ground well on a hunt. He is a very very responsive dog. Gip is a pleasure to be with, a solid, quiet companion with an extremely gentle temperament, especially around young children. However he is very much an alpha male. In the kennel he is exceedingly quiet, patient, and clean. He is a joy and a treat, with an amazing capacity. One of our best dogs by far!

K9 Xena - KNPV training
Xena's appearance in the clip is at 00:45 secs and again near the end in the rain. Recently, I was lucky enough to be invited to a KNPV demonstration/training day. This took part in Yorkshire, England and involved several Dutch guys from one of Holland's KNPV clubs. (Dutch Police Dog Training). After the more than impressive demonstration and display of both dogs, handlers and decoys, we were then afforded the opportunity to train/test our own dogs on the decoys. The KNPV method of dog deployment is quite different from other disciplines and although unusual, has many benefits. I particularly like the idea of close work with your dog - you & your dog in the fight against the decoy (bad guy). The experts on the day gave great instruction and it was a superb experience. Xena took it all in her stride and gave a very good performance, which I was most proud of.
